CBMF: Tell us about your musical roots.

John Jorgenson: Classical, rock, jazz…and choir.

 

CBMF: What are you listening to right now?

JJ: Beth Nielsen Chapman’s latest CD Hearts of Glass

 

CBMF: Who is your dream collaborator?

JJ: Edgar Winter

 

CBMF: Who had the most significant impact on your musical taste as a child and teenager?

JJ: The Beatles

 

CBMF: Which musicians do you consider your greatest influences today?

JJ: Django Reinhardt

 

CBMF: What drew you to gypsy jazz?

JJ: The unique tone of Django’s guitar, and the high energy and emotion within the style.

 

CBMF: If not gypsy jazz, what kind of music would you make?

JJ: Well I actually actively have three bands one is bluegrass, one is electric rock and of course, I have my gypsy jazz quintet. I also play and sing folk music, traditional jazz, ethnic music, pop, world music…I really love it all and play at all when I can.

 

CBMF: What fact about you most surprises people?

JJ: I think people are surprised at my eclectic-ness and many people seem to be surprised that I’m pretty humble.

 

CBMF: What was your earliest ambition?

JJ: To be a veterinarian or disc jockey.

 

CBMF: Imagine yourself at 10, how would younger you react to your life today?

JJ: My 10-year-old self would be amazed and wouldn’t believe how many guitars I have!!

 

CBMF: Where do you find inspiration?

JJ: From life, friends, other creative artists…

 

CBMF: Describe your rehearsal routine.

JJ: Don’t really have one. I just play and try to become one with the instruments.

 

CBMF: How do you prepare for a performance?

JJ: Make sure all the gear works, and have the stage and setlist ready as much as possible.

 

CBMF: If you had a time machine, what concert would be your first stop?

JJ: Django in England in the mid-30s.

 

CBMF: What song would you love to cover/rearrange?

JJ: That changes hourly…maybe Delilah by Tom Jones!
